What Is Ocimene?

All cannabis strains have a distinct flavor and aroma. The presence of terpenes are what makes each cannabis flower unique. Changes in just one terpene can totally alter how the bud smells or what it tastes like.

What is ocimene?

One terpene that is commonly found in cannabis is ocimene. This unique terpene is responsible for the sweet and herbaceous flavors found in some strains. It can sometimes also add earthy and citrus undertone tastes. This terpene might also be responsible for delivering uplifting effects and could contain some medicinal properties, but there is still more research that needs to be done regarding those claims.

Ocimene smell

Ocimene has a distinct smell of sweetness and herbs. Because of this, it’s often used in the perfume industry.

It’s found in a wide variety of plants, not only cannabis. For example, kumquats, mangos, basil, bergamot, lavender, pepper, and orchids all contain ocimene.

Ocimene effects and benefits

Research has shown that ocimene may assist in treating symptoms of diabetes because it inhibits the rapid increase of key enzymes. In a study done in 2013, essential oils were extracted from black pepper seeds that contained ocimene. The oil was shown to have anti-oxidative properties and had the ability to stop enzymes that are connected with type 2 diabetes and hypertension.

Another study done in 2014 showed that ocimene had highly anti-inflammatory properties. The study also revealed that it can slow or stop the production of several different inflammatory substances that the immune system produces.

In plants, ocimene acts as a protective agent against harmful elements like pests. Aphids, which can cause alot of harm to crops, don’t come near strains that contain ocimene the same way that mosquitos steer clear of citrus oils in some varieties of plants and flowers.
