Can You Donate Blood or Plasma If You Smoke Weed?

Can You Donate Blood or Plasma If You Smoke Weed?

Donating blood is a free and helpful way to give back to your community. Every year, millions of people rely on blood donors to save lives. Especially in 2020 amidst an ongoing pandemic, blood donation has never been more essential. But with many people being concerned about social distancing, the rate of blood donation has significantly decreased over the past year.

For those who have had Covid-19 and recovered, donating blood and particularly plasma is a vital way to help others who are suffering from the virus. The part of the blood that contains antibodies can help save lives of those still battling with covid.

Some people may think that they are disqualified from donating blood if they smoke weed. But “According to the Red Cross, using marijuana does not immediately disqualify a person as a blood donor,” says Dr. Melanie Bone, a board-certified OB-GYN and cannabis specialist from West Palm Beach Florida.

The Red Cross website states, “The use of cannabis does not disqualify an individual from blood donation, but potential donors cannot give if their use of cannabis impairs their memory or comprehension.”

So let’s break this down a little.
If you’ve recently smoked a strain that’s high in THC, such as Snickerdoodle, then this could effect your comprehension or memory, and you may be disqualified from donating blood.
However, if you’ve recently smoked a strain that is low in THC or contains none, such as a hemp flower like Just Hemp CBD Flower, then you’ll be in the clear to donate blood or plasma. These low THC high CBD strains will not effect your cognitive ability.

Do blood banks test for THC?

Currently, there is no rapid testing that shows THC in your blood. Generally, blood banks do not test for THC, CBD, or any cannabinoids. The FDA does not require blood donation centers to test for THC. Obviously, you shouldn’t smoke weed before giving blood and never donate blood if you are currently high.
