Women With Menopause Turn To Cannabis

Every year, more than two million women reach menopause, while 27 million are already dealing with it. Menopause is defined as the end of a woman’s menstrual cycle, when they experience a natural decline in their reproductive function with symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats and mood irregularity.
The North American Menopause Society’s (NAMS) annual meeting shows one in three women with menopause uses cannabis to manage their symptoms. Furthermore, 10% had an interest in trying it in the future as treatment. What’s more surprising is that many women were more open to trying cannabis than more traditional remedies such as hormone treatment.
Carolyn Gibson, who is the study’s lead author says, “These findings suggest that cannabis use to manage menopause symptoms may be relatively common. However, we do not know whether cannabis use is safe or effective for menopause symptom management or whether women are discussing these decisions with their healthcare providers—particularly in the VA, where cannabis is considered an illegal substance under federal guidelines.”
Researchers at the San Fransisco VA Medical Center studies 232 women in their upper 50’s who live in Northern California and had participated in the Midlife Women Veterans Health Survey. Surprisingly, cannabis use was most commonly reported by those who had hot flashes and night sweats, which was more than 50% of those surveyed.
Paul Armentano, the Deputy Director of NORML says, “While the therapeutic use of cannabis by veterans is not altogether uncommon, this study is among the first to highlight veterans’ use of marijuana for this particular condition. Given cannabis’ relatively high rate of use among the women in this cohort, scientists and others would be well-advised to further explore its safety, efficacy, and prevalence among women experiencing menopause.”
