What To Do If Your Dog Eats An Edible

With cannabis use on the rise, it’s becoming increasingly popular for pets to accidentally eat THC edibles. Over the past six years, there has been a 448% increase in marijuana cases that involve pets. Although humans generally love the effects from edibles, dogs, cats, and other household pets aren’t exactly looking to get high. But hey, accidents happen and sometimes animals can ingest THC. So what should you do if your dog, cat, lizard, or any other pet eats an edible?

The first thing you should do is stay calm and asses the situation. See what exactly your dog just ate. Did they swallow part of the edible wrapper? Did the edible contain chocolate? If this is the case, contact the vet immediately, as these can seriously harm your pet.

The truth is, any amount of THC can be harmful to animals. The symptoms of cannabis toxicity will start to show after about 30 minutes. Look out for the signs of cannabis poisoning and if you see your dog with any of these symptoms, contact your vet:

  • Drooling

  • Vomiting

  • Wobbly

  • Breathing difficulties

  • Whining

  • Lethargy

  • Rapid heart rate

  • Shock or collapse

What will the vet do if my dog eats an edible?

The vet has a few options to help your dog. They can either induce vomiting, pump there stomach, or give them activated charcoal which will help get rid of cannabis from there system. They may also regulate the temperature of your pet to ensure they aren’t too hot or cold and give fluids to help maintain hydration. The vet also may release your dog before the effects have worn off, in which case it’s up to you to care for them until they feel better. Your pup will most likely feel very uncomfortable and confused. The best thing you can do is to gently stroke them and keep them hydrated with lots of water. Stay near and don’t leave them alone.

How long will my dog be high?

The high your dog will feel will generally last about the same amount as a person’s high. Keep in mind, your dog will probably eat the entire edible. This is usually much more than the recommended dose, so there high will be very intense and last quite a while.

How can you prevent dogs from eating marijuana edibles?

The best way to prevent your pup from eating your edibles is to store them in a safe place away from reach. Consider storing them somewhere that your dog can’t access, such as in the fridge. Don’t leave them anywhere that the dog can reach. Remember that being a good cannabis user also means being a responsible cannabis user!
