MAUCRUSA set the following cannabis possession limits for adults 21 and over:

Up to 1 ounce, or 28.5 grams of flower, up to 8 grams of concentrate and up to six living cannabis plants in there home.

However, a patient with a medical marijuana card can possess up to 8 ounces, or 227 grams, of dried marijuana and may have up to six mature or 12 immature marijuana plants in there home.

Patients with medical marijuana cards are also exempt from paying cannabis sales tax, which could reach upwards of 30%.

How to get a medical cannabis card in CA

Those who would like to possess a Medical Marijuana ID Card (MMIC) must get it through a county program. They cannot get one through an attending physician or evaluation center.

They also need to submit a copy of there medical marijuana recommendation, proof of ID, and proof of residency. The fees vary from county to county but they cannot exceed $100.

The role of a caregiver

If a cannabis patient is unable to care for themselves, they may appoint a caregiver. A primary caregiver is a person responsible for the health, safety, and housing of a patient. In order to be a primary caregiver, a person must be at least 18 years of age or be an emancipated minor. They can also be the parent of a minor child who is a patient. Caregivers must provide a valid ID and must apply in person along with the patient. Caregivers are allowed to possess up to 8 oz of dried cannabis per patient and can maintain six mature cannabis plants or 12 mature cannabis plants.
