Granddaddy Purple Strain Review

Released in 2003 by Ken Estes, Granddaddy Purple (or GDP) is actually a famous indica cross of Big Bud and Purple Urkle. This California staple inherits a complex grape and berry aroma from it’s Purple Urkle parent, while Big Bud passes on it’s oversized, compact bud structure. GDP flowers bloom in shades of deep purple, a contrasting backdrop for it’s snow-like dusting of white crystal resin.

When it was created back in 2003 by Ken Estes, he and his team sought out to create the ultimate Indica hybrid by merging two strains with fantastic genetics – Big Bud and Purple Urkle. The product of these 2, Grand Daddy Purple, is actually a spitting image of it is parents’ two best qualities – the strong and dark purple hue from Purple Urkle and the overgrown, dense buds of Big Bud. The dark purple buds blend perfectly with the bright orange hairs and frosted white trichomes that generously cover the bud making it an incredibly photogenic strain.
From San Francisco down to Los Angeles, Granddaddy Purple is actually among the most sought-after Indica strains due to it’s classic Indica and Hollywood looks. Despite this popularity, many growers and those working in the cannabis industry have reported that Grand Daddy Purps is almost identical to another famous purple strain – Grape Ape.
Some even go so far as to speculate that these two strains may be in fact the exact same. Others simply say they’re so eerily similar in effects, taste, look, and lineage that they’re just confused with one another by growers, dispensaries, and consumers alike.
How strong is Granddaddy Purple?
Perfect for nighttime use, Granddaddy Purple hits both the body and mind initially but quickly fades into a sleek body buzz as most heavy Indicas do. For patients, Granddaddy Purps is great for pain control. It is also effective at treating anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Novice users beware though, this strain is able to pack a strong punch. We would recommend starting with a hit or perhaps two and waiting a couple of minutes before opting to consume more.
How does it grow?
Granddaddy Purple grows best indoors but can be grown outside as well. Flowering commences usually around 70-77 days when grown indoors and growers are able to expect harvest in early October when grown outdoors. The oversized buds may start to weigh down the plant, particularly if grown outdoors. When grown indoors, the plant must be stocky and short enough to hold the weight but you might wish to prepare to give some support around the sixty-day mark in case you see the buds starting to wear down the plant’s frame. Yields are able to top four ounces per plant on an indoor grow and well more than three pounds per plant on an outdoor grow. For optimal results keep temperatures within the 70’s throughout the grow cycle and keep humidity between 50 55%.
