So how did you decide to deliver cannabis and get your job at Kushfly?

My friend Eric, in real estate, was working here part-time. Well, COVID changed a lot of things. I was looking for part-time work and remembered Eric was driving for Kushfly, and asked him if Kushfly was hiring. I think I would not be happy doing any other delivery job. Later, I found out that I like a lot of things about it. I said if I was going to do a driving job, cannabis is almost an honorable trade.

Why did delivering cannabis seem like a promising job opportunity for you at first?

I had my company doing something else. When covid came around, I started looking in other directions for income. This industry is flourishing, so when Eric told me they were hiring here, I decided to give it a try. Honestly, I needed an income because my company was not doing anything.

Does this job make you feel more social?

In a different way, absolutely! My company was a media company, so I was already social, but this is different. I get out, meet different customers, working with different people all the time, like other drivers, so I have been here for a couple of years, and I get to know my customers. I miss my customers. Sometimes I think, maybe this person orders again, and I would be the one to deliver. It’s good.

What was the reaction from your friends and family when you told them you got a courier job in the cannabis industry?

Haha, a lot of smiles! A lot of people automatically approached it like, “Oh, that’s lucrative, it’s a very big business, and you can make a lot of money.” Money is okay, but I don’t do a job just for the money. I feel like I make an investment just as they invest in me. That’s equally important to me. My family and friends all respect it. I have no problem telling people working in the cannabis industry. When I play video games, I talk to people all over the world, and they ask me about my job, and they just love it!

Cannabis Delivery Driver in Los Angeles

What does it take to be a cannabis delivery driver?

It takes patience because, in Southern California, there is a lot of traffic. Sometimes customers ask about the product; they want to know your opinion. So this takes experience and patience. We use electronic devices, and sometimes they have problems with devices. And finally, sometimes you play the detective. You just need to find the right directions about where they live and where the building is.

Experience with the products is also helpful. For instance, I remember one customer. She said, “I took too many edibles, and it got me stoned. I did not read the directions.” That’s her fault. But with this cannabis delivery driver job, I found out that CBD is very good at counteracting THC’s effects. So I told her this, and she was grateful.

Do you think a career pivot to weed delivery might be a great choice for people?

I do think it’s a good career pivot. I have been asked other things with the company sometimes, and there are always new opportunities. If you don’t know what you want to do or pursue in school or something, I think it’s a great part-time job.

Take me through your average workday at Kushfly. What does a typical day look like for you?

I turn my communication app with my dispatcher, tell them I am on my way, and trying to always be on time. My thing is always to be the best person I can be all the time. That is what I wake up to do. I show up; they tell me to pick up a few orders; I pick them up, look at the orders and say, “Oh, I know this guy; I am looking forward to seeing this person.” I count my money; I make sure all my paperwork is correct.

How many deliveries are you getting out through the day?

It changes. When I started, at the height of COVID, I was doing 20-25 deliveries a day. But now, a busy day for me is 15 deliveries.

What is the most fun point of delivering cannabis in Los Angeles? What was the most fun experience you have had while delivering?

This was a crazy experience; I still laugh about it today. There is this older lady; who did not want her daughter to know about her consumption. So she says, “Meet me in the corner over here, behind the building!” We go behind the building. All of a sudden, I am like a real drug dealer doing drug dealing in the street, you know. She takes the bag from me, takes it out, and puts it in her underwear. And she says, “Now, we are really good friends. We have to be discreet because if my daughter finds out, I am in big trouble!”

What is the biggest challenge for a cannabis delivery driver?

Always being patient. Always give yourself something to do. If you are going to sit and wait on a slow day, you are either going to watch videos on your phone or read something on the internet. Just don’t expect every day going to be a really busy day. And if we are really busy, of course, traffic is the biggest challenge.

Which days are the most challenging ones?

Any type of holiday. We are far busy. Everyone wants to celebrate these days, and cannabis is legal for it.

How much do drivers make? How are the tips these days?

I would say a driver makes approximately 20 – 25 dollars a day.

One thing I’ve learned is that stop counting because if you expect tips from people, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. I try not to count my tips. I don’t rely on tips, more on my base pay, but the tips do help. And it is better when they are on cash. (Laughter)

Do you have favorite regular customers?

I have an old guy in Burbank who has a huge garden, and I have a friend who owns a gardening company, so we always talk about gardening. Sometimes I don’t see him for a whole season, and he tells me what he is growing. I have another customer from England, just like me. So we talk about football, snooker, and sometimes Americans, differences, and so. So these are my favorite customers.

Is there anything that customers should keep in mind to make cannabis delivery drivers’ jobs easier and safer?

Be specific about how to find you. When you place your order, there is an option to give us notes. Make sure to provide us with notes if it is difficult to find your unit, building, etc. Cannabis delivery drivers need to know those things. And turning on your lights at night would be helpful.

Do you have any Kushfly cannabis product advice for people?

Always have CBD available. Because sometimes there are so many potent products, and only some know what they are taking. So, it’s good to have CBD around.
