THC In Cannabis May Help Prevent Fatal COVID-19 Complications

Researchers at the University of South Carolina recently published preliminary results that show THC found in cannabis may be an effective way to treat some fatal COVID-19 complications.

During the study, which was done on mice, scientists discovered that THC can prevent the harmful immune response that causes Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). Also, they believe that it could lead to a decent increase in healthy lung bacteria.

ARDS can potentially be fatal, and those who survive it often have lasting pulmonary scarring.

ARDS causes the body’s immune system to overload and destroy the lungs and other organs, as well as the disease it is trying to fight. When you can’t get it under control and stop the organs from being destroyed, it can lead to a fatality.

The researchers are still not recommending health professionals begin human trials of the treatment, nor are they advocating for patients to self medicate with cannabis if they have an active COVID infection.

THC has been shown to suppress the immune system, so using it early on in an infection may actually make your body’s response to COVID-19 worse rather than better.

Other studies also suggest cannabis could help treat COVID-19

The researchers at University of South Carolina weren’t the first to suggest that cannabis may be useful in the fight against COVID.

Back in August, there was a study published that said a specific terpene formulation found in the cannabis plant may be useful in treating cytokine storm syndrome caused by COVID-19.

Cytokine storm syndrome is a form of inflammatory response where white blood cells are activated and release inflammatory cytokines, which then activate more white blood cells. This can cause symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and vomiting. It could potentially advance to a point where a person needs to stay on a ventilator to live.
