What Is Dry Sift?

What Is Dry Sift?

Dry sifting is one of the oldest hash making techniques there is. In places around the world like Morocco, Lebanon, and Afghanistan where hash is popular, this method has been used for many years. It’s essentially what most people know as kief, but manufactured on a much larger scale. The end result is a high potency product that can be used to make concentrates like hash or resin.

Let’s dive in and learn all about this interesting product and technique!

What is dry sift?

Dry sift is any solventless concentrate that was made by collecting trichomes from cannabis flowers. It’s similar to kief. It has an extremely soft texture and appearance, almost like sand. It is surprisingly very easy to make, and can be made at home by sifting cannabis through dry sift screens. It can be pressed into rosin or mixed with cannabis flowers in a joint, blunt, or pipe for added potency.

So, what is dry sift hash?

Dry sift hash is hash that was made by using the dry sifting technique. The final product is similar to traditional hash.

What is better, dry sift vs bubble hash?

Bubble hash is a dark brown, crumbly cannabis concentrate that contains tons of trichomes. These trichomes are separated from the cannabis plant using ice-water, agitation, and a sieve. This type of concentrate gets it’s name from the small bubbles that form when it is smoked; there is even a saying ‘If it doesn’t bubble, it’s not worth the trouble’. The name also refers to the ‘bubble’ bags used when making it.

Dry sift and bubble hash both produce kief. The difference is the process they go through when making it.

Both techniques can produce a potent product, but it really depends on the quality of the flower that was used to make it. Therefore, it is impossible to say if bubble hash or dry sift is better. It depends on the flower being used.

How to make it

If you grind weed in a grinder, your probably making dry sift without even realizing it. All of the kief that collects at the bottom of the grinder is basically dry sift.

The process of making traditional dry sift is similar, but on a much larger scale. If your interested in making your own that you can turn into hash or resin, than you may want to invest in a dry sift machine or a pollen pox.

The purpose of a pollen box is to act as a mesh grid and kief chamber in a grinder, but as a larger version. A pollen box is a wooden or plastic tray with a 100- micron mesh sealed to the top.

To make it, you’ll need a few handfuls of dried cannabis flowers. Put them onto the mesh surface on the pollen box and shake it from side to side. Do this until you see a layer of trichomes forming at the bottom of the catch tray. Continue to add more flower until you have gathered a substantial amount. Now you can use it to make concentrates like hash or rosin, or smoke it as is by adding it to a joint, blunt, or bowl.

How to store it

Now that you’ve made enough, let’s store it. Some people choose to store it how it is, and use the powder form in joints, blunts, or bong bowls. In this case, store the dry sift in an airtight container and place it in the fridge until you are ready to use it.

You may also choose to press it at this time. Pressing is a good option if your not planning on consuming it any time soon. The best way to press hash is to use a pollen press.

Can you dab dry sift?

If you try to dab dry sift as is, it will most likely char upon being dabbed. Your best bet is to press the dry sift into rosin and than dab it. This will allow for a smooth, clean burn when it’s burned.
