The Differences Between Indica and Sativa

The two main types of marijuana plants are Indica and Sativa. Each has it’s own effects that it delivers, resulting in a wide range of benefits. Indica strains generally deliver a deep sense of body relaxation, while Sativa plants tend to provide an energizing, uplifting experience.

Cannabis Indica

Indica flowers typically grow short and wide. This growth pattern makes Indica flowers better suited for indoor growing. The high produced from smoking Indica bud is a strong physical body high which will make you sleepy or ‘couch-locked’ and provides a deep relaxation feeling.

Indica-dominant cannabis strains have a tendency to have a strong sweet or sour odor to the buds (ex. Kush, OG Kush) providing a very calming and robust body high that’s helpful in treating general nervousness, body pain, and sleeping disorders.

Indicas are very efficient for overall pain relief and are usually used to treat insomnia for many individuals. Indica buds are most commonly smoked by medical cannabis patients in the late evening or before bed due to how sleepy and tired you become when high from an indica strain of cannabis. The most famous Indica strains currently include Kush, Northern Lights, and White Widow.

Major qualities of Indica strains include:

  • increased mental relaxation
  • muscle relaxation
  • decreases nausea
  • decreases acute pain
  • increases appetite
  • increases dopamine (a neurotransmitter that helps control the brain’s reward and pleasure centers)
  • ideal for night time use

Advantages of Indica:

  • Relieves body pain
  • Relaxes muscles
  • Relieves spasms, reduces seizures
  • Relieves headaches and migraines
  • Relieves nervousness or stress
Understanding The Differences Between Indica & Sativa
Indica leaves tend to be shorter and rounder, while Sativa leaves are thinner and taller.

Cannabis Sativa

Cannabis Sativa plants are opposite of the Indica strains and grow tall and thin with narrow leaves. Most times, Sativa plants are a lighter shade of green than an Indica strain. Sativa strains take longer to grow, mature and require more light. Cannabis Sativa plants contain lower CBD and higher THC counts.

Opposite from Indica flowers, Sativa flowers grow tall and thin, which makes them better suited for outdoor growing – particularly since some strains can reach over 25 ft. in height. A Sativa high is known to be more full of energy and uplifting.

Sativa-dominant cannabis strains have a tendency to have a more grassy type odor to the buds providing an uplifting, full of energy and “cerebral” high that’s best suited for daytime smoking. A sativa high is one full of creativity and energy as being high on sativa can spark new ideas and creations. Many artists take benefit of the creative powers of cannabis sativa (marijuana) to create paintings. The most famous sativa strains include Purple Haze and Mauwie Wauwie.

The major qualities of Sativa medicinal strains include:

  • anti-anxiety
  • anti-depressant
  • treats chronic pain
  • increases focus and creativity
  • increases serotonin (a neurotransmitter involved in the regulation of learning, mood, sleep, anxiety and appetite)
  • ideal for day time use

Advantages of Sativa:

  • Emotions of well-being and at-ease
  • Up-lifting and cerebral thoughts
  • Stimulates and energizes
  • Increases focus and creativity
  • Fights depression
