How To Use Cannabis For Back Pain

Cannabis for back pain

If you experience back pain on a regular basis, you’re not alone. In fact, nearly 16 million Americans report constant back pain and are restricted from enjoying physical activities as a result. Chronic pain affects more people than heart disease, cancer, and diabetes combined. Using cannabis for back pain that has been caused by nerve damage and inflammation could help to alleviate some of the pain. Cannabis is a much more natural alternative to prescription pain killers and doesn’t come with any of the risks of developing an addiction.

How can I use cannabis for back pain?

In many studies, cannabis and the compounds inside of it have been shown to relieve various types of pain.

Different strains will deliver different effects, and some are more effective than others at relieving back pain.

There are three variations of the cannabis plant:

  • Cannabis Sativa
  • Cannabis Indica
  • Hybrid

When it comes to pain relief, indica strains are best suited due to their higher CBD count. Indica strains are generally used for pain management, sedation, and as a sleep aid.

Participants in a study done in 2014 by the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine said that indica cannabis strains showed a significant result in decreasing:

  • non-migraine related headaches
  • neuropathy
  • spasticity
  • joint pain

How does cannabis work for pain relief?

Is the cannabis plant just a magical creature that instantly relieves pain? We’d like to think so, but there is also some science to back up our claim as well.

The components in the cannabis plant that focus on pain relief are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

THC is similar to the cannabinoid chemicals that are naturally found in our bodies. When THC is ingested, the brain’s cannabinoid receptors become stimulated.

In return, the brain’s reward system gets activates and reduces pain levels. THC is a psychoactive compound that attaches to the cannabinoid receptors and delivers the ‘high’ that we’re familiar with.

CBD on the other hand does not deliver any high feelings, but it does interact with pain receptors to relieve pain and deliver anti-inflammatory effects.
