How Long Is Weed Good For?

We’ve all been there. You find a small nug in your pocket and ask yourself ‘How long has this been there? I wonder if it’s still good to smoke.’ Unless your weed is totally dried out or moldy, chances are that your weed is fine to smoke. If you store it properly, weed can last from six months to a year before going bad. Before you go digging around your room to see if you can find any old weed, check out these tips for how to properly store it.

Ideal Temperatures

Mold thrives in temperatures between 77º and 86ºF. Store your cannabis in areas with a lower temperature, but not too cold. Lower temperatures also slow the process of decarboxylation of cannabinoids, the process in which THCA converts into the intoxicating cannabinoid THC.

Things to Do:

  • Keep your weed out of direct sunlight
  • Store it in a cool, dry place
  • Vacuum seal jars and containers to keep out any moisture
  • Separate your strains to maximize their full potential

Things to NOT Do:

  • Store your weed in the fridge. The fluctuations in humidity and temperature can actually increase your chance of mold and mildew.
  • Store your cannabis in the freezer. Freezing temperatures cause the fragile trichomes to become brittle and break off like little icicles when handled.
  • Store your weed in cheap plastic bags. Plastic often has a static charge that can attract precious trichomes.
  • Store your cannabis on top of the fridge or near any electronic device that gives off heat
  • Store grinders, pipes, or other accessories with your weed. The ash and resin from burnt cannabis tends to linger and will stink up any storage container.

How Long Does Weed Stay Good

Cannabis can maintain its potency and quality for a considerable time if stored correctly. Typically, well-stored weed can stay good for about 6 months to a year without significant loss of potency. However, this duration can vary based on factors like the strain, the initial quality of the product, and the storage conditions.

Factors Influencing Shelf Life

  • Storage Conditions: Light, air, temperature, and humidity play significant roles in the longevity of cannabis.
  • Quality of the Product: Higher quality cannabis tends to have a longer shelf life.
  • Packaging: Airtight containers, ideally made of dark glass or metal, can significantly extend the shelf life of weed.

How Long Is Weed Good For

The ‘good for’ period of weed refers to the time frame in which it retains its best quality in terms of flavor, aroma, and potency. Generally, weed is considered to be at its best quality for up to 6 months when stored properly. After this period, it may gradually lose its aroma and potency, but it can still be consumed.

Signs of Deterioration

  • Loss of Aroma: Weed that’s losing its potency will often lose its characteristic smell.
  • Change in Color: Over time, the vibrant greens may turn to a duller brown or yellow.
  • Texture Changes: Dryness or excessive crumbliness can indicate that the weed is past its prime.

Tips for Extending Shelf Life

  • Avoid Light: Store weed in a dark place or use containers that block out light.
  • Control Temperature: Keep it in a cool, but not cold, environment.
  • Maintain Humidity: Aim for 59% to 63% relative humidity in the storage area.
  • Limit Air Exposure: Use airtight containers and open them only when necessary.
