Hemp Fabric Can Kill Staph Bacteria

Hemp Fabric Can Kill Staph Bacteria

A recent study has shown that fabric made from hemp can be naturally resistant to bacteria and even kill strains of staph on it’s surface.

In 2006, nearly 2 million Americans were infected each year during hospital stays, and almost 90,000 of them died as a result of the infection. Nearly 70 percent of the bacteria was resistant to at least one of the drugs commonly used.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that MRSA rates lowered between 2005 and 2011 by 31 percent, but there were still over 80,000 MRSA infections and 11,000 deaths in 2011.

EnviroTextiles, based in Glenwood Springs, CO,  is the largest manufacturer and importer of industrial hemp in America. They reported that one of there materials made of 40 percent rayon and 60 percent hemp was able to kill two strains of surface bacteria, including staph and Klebsiella Pneumoniae, AKA pneumonia.

Barbara Filippone is the lead textile engineer at EnviroTextiles. She tested the fabrics when she was working on hemp textile development in China, which is the leading country of hemp production.

“The staph test sample was already 98.5 percent bacteria-free during the first measurement of the testing, while the pneumonia fabric sample was 65.1 percent bacteria-free,” the company site states. Compare this to polyester, cotton, and polyethylene, where bacteria can survive for up to five months.

About Hemp

Hemp was popular in early American commerce and culture, but was banned because of it’s relation to marijuana. But more recently, it is becoming more accepted. In fact, a total of 39 states have removed restrictions to industrial hemp production. In 2017 alone, Americans consumed about $580 million worth of hemp products.

Hemp is a versatile compound that can be made into fabric, fuel, soap, building materials, and other products. It grows in all 50 states across America and needs less water, land, and manpower to grow than many other plants used for fiber. Cotton requires about 50 percent more water each season than hemp.
