Wondering around Copenhagen, you’ll notice beautiful old buildings, tons of bike riders, and blue water canals filled with boats. What you may not notice however, is the hidden area called Freetown Christiana. In Christiana, weed lovers are free to smoke out in the open, buy different weed products, and just hang out and enjoy the day. If you’re thinking this sounds strange, you wouldn’t be wrong. Recreation marijuana use is illegal in Denmark, but for some reason, Christiana stands free. Christiana gets thousands of visitors every year and it’s the third most popular tourist destination in Denmark.
Christiana is a former military base that dates back to 1971. It became a haven for young people who were unable to pay for an apartment in Copenhagen, and activists from all over. Originally, the area was lovingly referred to as ‘loser’s paradise.’ Currently, there are about 900 people who live in Christiana. The people in Christiania have developed their own set of rules. The rules forbid stealing, violence, guns, knives, bulletproof vests, and selling or taking hard drugs.
The cannabis trade was tolerated by authorities until 2004. Since then, relations between Christiania and Danish authorities have been strained. Nowadays, the area has its own rules and regulations completely independent of the Danish government.
What Is There To Do?
Think of Freetown Christiana as its own tiny village. The area contains houses, restaurants, bars, a music venue, and small stands to buy cannabis. As like most dispensaries, the owners label the strains and are happy to assist with any questions about their weed. For a perfect day in this tiny town, grab a few joints, a beer, and head over to the lake where you can have a picnic with other cannabis lovers!
