CBD For Elephants?

A rep for the Warsaw Zoo in Poland said that they will begin to give its elephants cbd. This is part of a ground-breaking project to see how CBD can reduce the animal’s stress levels.

Medical cannabis has been used worldwide to treat dogs and horses but “this is probably the first initiative of its kind for elephants,” says Agnieszka Czujkowska, the veterinarian who is in charge of the project.

The veterinarian would like to remind the public that CBD does not cause any psychoactive effects, nor does it have any harmful side effects on the kidney and liver.

“It’s an attempt to find a new natural alternative to the existing methods of combating stress, especially pharmaceutical drugs,” Czujkowska said.

The zoo has recently lost an alpha female elephant, so this project comes at an opportune time, as the heard is under more stress than usual. The zoo keeps track of the elephant’s stress levels by monitoring their hormone levels and through behavioral observation.

According to Czujkowska, it will take around two years before any conclusive results are found. If it is successful, CBD could be used for other animals living in captivity.

“Contrary to what some would imagine, the elephants won’t be using cannabis pipes nor will they be getting huge barrels of it” to match their size, Czujkowska said.

“The female Fryderyka has already had a chance to try it and she didn’t say no,” Czujkowska said.

Due to poaching, the world elephant population has dropped from several million at the turn of the 19th century to around 400,000 today.
