Cannabis doesn’t discriminate against gender, race, or age. The healing properties of this amazing plant are becoming increasingly popular, particularly among seniors. According to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, cannabis use among adults age 65 and older has increased from 2.4% in 2015, to 4.2% in 2018.

Why is cannabis use among seniors becoming more popular?
There are a few different factors that contribute to the increasing trend. One of them could be the stigma behind cannabis. With modern thinking, most people don’t view cannabis as a hard drug anymore, and cannabis use has become much more normal in society. In a recent poll, 94% of Americans supported legal access to medical marijuana, and most states have approved some form of legal access.
Another reason could be the different forms of cannabis that is available to consumers. Those over the age of 65 with health issues such as breathing problems don’t necessarily have to light up to reap the benefits of marijuana. Tinctures, edibles, lotions, and creams can be easily purchased to relieve pain, or treat whatever ailments the individual is suffering from.
What conditions are seniors looking to treat?
Studies have shown that seniors are looking to treat the same conditions as younger people. Insomnia, anxiety, and pain.
Researchers examined 204 medical marijuana patients in New York aged 75 and older to ascertain how they reacted to cannabis to treat their symptoms and possibly lower their dependence and use of opioids. Seventy-five percent of those participants had been treated for chronic pain, together with neuropathy, cancer, MS, epilepsy, and Parkinson’s. All were treated with products which contained both THC and CBD, which the majority receiving tinctures applied under the tongue by dropper.
