History of Culver City, California
After enduring more than a century of prohibition, cannabis secured legal recreational status in California on January 1, 2018.
While California is now synonymous with cannabis innovation, its history with the plant took a turn in 1911 when regulations criminalized its cultivation and consumption. The early 1900s witnessed the rise of “reefer madness,” leading California to enact strict policies against cannabis. The situation intensified in the 1930s when the Federal Marihuana Tax Act effectively banned cannabis across the United States. Despite some relaxation during World War II for hemp production, the strict laws persisted until the mid-1970s.
The turning point came in 1975 when Robert Randell, the first medicinal marijuana patient, successfully sued the government, marking the beginning of a shift in public perception. By 1996, Proposition 215, the Compassionate Use Act, made California the first state to permit widespread medicinal cannabis usage, paving the way for eventual recreational legalization in 2018.
Since then, California’s cannabis industry has become one of the fastest-growing sectors, generating nearly half a million jobs nationwide.
